Selfcare is not Selfish in support of World Parkinson's day

World Parkinson's Day is a time to raise awareness, celebrate resilience, support and advocate for a cure. But for those living with Parkinson's, it's also a powerful reminder: taking care of yourself is not a luxury, it's a necessity. This is the main reason why I have developed the Selfcare is not Selfish initiative, and I hope you will be willing to join me in making it resonate as wide as possible.

Mariam Bennouna, Menthal health coach supporting active people suffering from

My name is Mariam Bennouna. I'm a certified Mental Health Coach specializing in supporting active individuals living with Parkinson's Disease (PD). Diagnosed myself at the age of 28, I understand the challenges of navigating this condition while maintaining an active lifestyle. I'm supporting the World Parkinson's Day.

The guilt of prioritizing self-care is a common burden many with Parkinson's carry.  "I don't want to be a burden," or "My loved ones need me more," are thoughts that can hold us back from activities that improve our well-being.  But here's the truth:  when you take care of yourself, you become better equipped to take care of everything else.

Think of it like this: on an airplane, they instruct you to put on your oxygen mask first before helping others. It's not because you don't care about others, it's because you can't help them if you're struggling to breathe yourself. The same applies to Parkinson's.

Here's how self-care empowers you on your Parkinson's journey:

  • Improved Energy: Exercise, healthy eating, and sleep all contribute to better energy levels. This allows you to participate in activities you enjoy, spend time with loved ones, and manage daily tasks more efficiently.

  • Enhanced Mood: Self-care activities like meditation, spending time in nature, or connecting with friends can boost your mood and combat feelings of isolation.

  • Sharper Focus: Prioritizing sleep and healthy habits leads to better cognitive function, allowing you to stay engaged in activities that stimulate your mind.

  • Better Management of Symptoms: By taking care of your physical and mental health, you become a stronger partner in managing your Parkinson's symptoms with your doctor.

In support of the World Parkinson's Day that is celebrated every year on April 11th, I have built a dedicated page to raise awareness about this disease not only within the community of sufferers and carers, but also the global community. I have the pleasure to invite you to visit it at this address:

Taking care of yourself is not a sign of weakness; it's a sign of strength and resilience.  It's about making choices that empower you to live your life to the fullest, with Parkinson's, not despite it.

So, on World Parkinson's Day, and every day,  give yourself permission to prioritize self-care.  Explore activities that bring you joy, find support groups that connect you with others, and remember, a healthy and happy you is the best version of you for everyone who loves you.
