Hi, my name is Mariam Bennouna.
I was only 28 when I discovered that I had Parkinson's!
It was such a shock; the only thing I knew about Parkinson was that it’s the kind-of-disease that you can potentially have at a senior age.
Adapting my life to Parkinson's
Despite the shock and the fears about the future, I decided to adapt my life around my symptoms and not let them become a burden on my loved ones. Thanks to my mental strength, my positive attitude, and resilience, I accepted it and learnt to navigate the unique challenges of living with this condition at such a young age. Today, I realize that Parkinson's has changed my life...to the better. Here is my story...
Turning Weaknesses Into Strengths
Closing my 12th year after being diagnosed, living with Parkinson's disease has taught me valuable life lessons. And to be honest, Parkinson's has served me good so far because I learnt :
To turn my weaknesses into strengths,
To always fight to be a better version of myself
To be more resilient and self-confident.
To change the way I look at things
To discover talents I never thought I had.
Today, I don't say ''I have Parkinson’s'', but rather ''I’m Living My Parkinson’’, exactly like I would say ''I'm living my life'' or ''I'm living my journey''. To foster this positive mindset and help other young people accept their diagnosis and develop resilience, I created the LIVING MY PARKINSON Community platforms on Facebook and Instagram. I warmly invite you to visit them if you are interested, and learn about not only the individual efforts but also the collective efforts done together with my fellow Parkinson's sufferers around the world.
Becoming a Mental Health Coach for active people with Parkinson's
My story with Parkinson's inspired me to become a Mental Health Coach for active people living with Parkinson's disease. Today, I’m working as a Master Coach, certified by the International Coaching Institute of Geneva. I help my clients navigate the unique challenges of living with this condition.
My Parkinson's Coaching Approach
I focus on helping my clients to enjoy their life to the fullest while managing their symptoms. This happens through a series of coaching sessions where I help them :
Better understand what Parkinson's disease is day-in, dau-out
Develop coping mechanisms to deal with the emotional and psychological challenges of their symptoms.
Set & achieve their personal goals while taking into account their condition.
Build resilience and self-confidence for long-term support
Connect with other young people living with Parkinson's.
