How Men and Women Experience Stress Differently

Stress can have a disastrous effect on both our bodies and minds. It is an unwanted guest in our everyday lives. But were you aware that men and women experience stress differently?

Although both experience the fight-or-flight response, there are some important differences in how we view and handle stress.

-          Hormonal Harmony (or Disharmony): 

The hormone oxytocin, sometimes referred to as the "cuddle hormone," is important for hormonal harmony (or discord). Oxytocin, which can offset the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, is typically produced in greater amounts by women. This could be the reason why, in times of stress, women tend to turn to "tend-and-befriend" behaviours in an attempt to find nurturing relationships and social support. Men may be more prone to the traditional "fight-or-flight" reaction, repressing emotions or acting aggressively, due to their lower oxytocin levels.

-          Social networks and support systems:

Research indicates that social interaction is essential for helping women cope with stress. Having emotional conversations with loved ones can act as a strong buffer. Conversely, men may find it more challenging to ask for emotional support, which increases the risk of internalised stress and substance abuse.

-          Different types of stressors:

Different stresses can also exist. Financial strains and job insecurity are frequently cited by men as major sources of stress. Women who balance work and family obligations may feel overburdened and stressed out from caring for others.

Recognising These Differences is very important to develop personalized coping mechanisms and build resilience in the face of life's challenges!

This is not to argue that women don't have fight-or-flight reactions, nor that men are emotionless machines. Although these are generalisations, every person's experience is unique. Recognising these possible variations, nevertheless, can be beneficial. Women should concentrate on creating close social bonds and establishing boundaries to avoid overload, while men might gain from learning how to communicate their feelings and ask for help.


Remember that stress reduction is essential for all people. Here are a few general pointers:


  • Healthy Habits: Exercise, proper sleep, and a balanced diet are essential for stress resilience.

  • Relaxation Techniques: Practice deep breathing, meditation, or mindfulness to calm the mind and body.

  • Seek Support: Don't be afraid to talk to a therapist or a coach for stress management strategies.
