The desire for a career change can have various reasons. Especially nowadays, many people are threatened with losing their jobs due to digitalization and the economic crisis.
The idea of starting a new career inevitably raises a series of questions that we must answer in order to be successful:
-
What do I want to do and what am I particularly good at?
-
What fills me and what gives me pleasure?
-
What are my goals and priorities in life, and how do they align with my career change plan?
-
Would I rather be an employee or an entrepreneur?
-
What if I make the wrong decision?
-
What if I fail?
What is the difference between reorientation, reconversion and professional transition?
-
Professional reorientation:
-
"Give a new direction to his career"
-
Often generated either by an external imperative (unemployment, dismissal, closure, business sector at half mast, etc.), or by an internal imperative (dream, self-realization, malaise, fed up, burn-out, disability, …), or both.
-
-
Professional reconversion:
-
A change of activity/career path
-
Consists of mourning the old world, coming back to yourself to immerse yourself in it, find other motivation and build your project.
-
Causes transformations of a profound nature which in turn lead to a radical modification of the environment.
-
-
Professional transition:
-
All the reorientations and professional reconversions in the life of a person
-
Like a PALMARES.

" A career change is a big challenge at any age!
Whether it's changing careers at 40 when we have a family and a loan to pay off or at 50 when we already feel too old to start something new and think it would be far too risky."
The 3 types of professional reconversion:
1. Vertical reconversion:
-
This type of reconversion involves moving up the career ladder in your current field.
-
For example, a software engineer can become a software architect or a project manager.

If you're happy with your current field but want to move up the career ladder, vertical reconversion might be a good option for you.

How to assess the risk you take during a professional reconversion?
1. Consider your financial situation Will you need to take out loans to pay for your education or training? Will you need a pay cut when you start your new job?
2. Consider your skills and experience - Do you have the skills and experience necessary for the career you want? - If not, will you need additional training or education? - How much time and money will it take to acquire the necessary skills and experience?
3. Research the job market - What are the job prospects for the career you want? - How much do people in this field typically earn? - Is there a demand for workers in this field?
4. Talk to people from the field - Talk to people who already work in the field you are targeting. - What do they like and dislike about their job? - What are the challenges of the job? - What are the opportunities for advancement?
5. Find a mentor - A mentor / a Coach can guide and support you as you change careers. - They can help you network, learn more about the industry, and find job opportunities.
6. Volunteer - Volunteering in your chosen field is a great way to gain experience and make connections. - It can also help you determine if this is the right career for you.
7. Start small - If you're not sure you want to completely change careers, you can start by taking on new responsibilities in your current role. - It will give you a taste of what it is like to work in a different field.
8. Don't give up your dreams - Changing careers can be difficult, but it's important to stay positive and persistent.
